The West Adelaide Bearcats have set themselves up as one of the teams to beat in the finals of the Basketball Australia Under-18 Club Championships.

But it has been the way the girls tournament front-runners have relied on the depth of their squad that should have alarm bells ringing across the country.

The Bercats finished the pool stage undefeated with a dominant 65-40 win over fellow undefeated outfit Cockburn Cougars.

While Coco Hodges and Ebony Mack have been the stars of the show for the Bearcats so far, this time it was Sophie Baker (15 points) and Krystal Thompson (11 points) who stepped up to lead the side.

The Cougars were without star NBL1 West guard Amelia Corasaniti, and it showed in the performance.

Joondalup Wolves big man Wieu Atuer added to his already impressive tournament highlights reel with a series of poster dunks and an alley-oop in his side’s big 66-42 win over Canberra.

The Wolves have been one of the quiet achievers in the boys division in Perth, and will move into the quarter-finals, finishing atop Pool C after the Diamond Valley Eagles suffered a shock loss on Thursday.

The Eagles went down by three points in a 73-70 thriller against Warwick Senators, but it was not enough for the Senators to force their way into the finals despite finishing on five points alongside the Eagles and Wolves.

In the final Court 6 game on Thursday, Sydneysiders Norths Bears made short work of Tasmania Tigers in the Under-18 girls tournament.

PREVIEW

The high-flying West Adelaide Bearcats will put their unbeaten streak on the line on a big day three at the Basketball Australia Under-18 Club Championships.

With South Australian rising star Coco Hodges pulling the strings from the back court, the Bearcats have been impressive over the opening two days in Perth.

But their unbeaten start to the nationals will be tested thoroughly on Thursday, when they open up the action on court six against fellow unbeaten juggernaut Cockburn Cougars.

The clash will put Hodges on a direct collision course with Cougars star guard Amelia Corasaniti, who has proven to be one of the star attractions at the Under-18 Club Championships.

Corasaniti sits fourth on the leaderboard for average points per game with 19.5, while the Bearcats best is Ebony Mack with 17.5.

The Cougars have two players in the top 10, with Corasaniti’s NBL1 West teammate Kinley Paterson showing a propensity to find the net with 16.67 points per game.

The Norths Bears girls will be determined to get back into the winner’s circle in Perth after crashing to the might of the Melbourne Tigers on Wednesday.

The impressive Diamond Valley Eagles will aim to finish the pool stage undefeated on top of Pool C when they clash with Warwick Senators on Thursday.

The Eagles made short work of Canberra on Wednesday, and will enter the third day of the tournament with plenty of confidence.

Every match of the Basketball Australia Under-18 Club Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from September 17-22.
