It was a thrilling day of action at the Basketball Australia Under-16 National Championships on Tuesday, with some key results setting the building blocks for Thursday’s play.
13 games were broadcast live and exclusive on KommunityTV, with one of the biggest the clash between undefeated boys outfits New South Wales Country and South Australia Metro.
That clash, along with two other big match-ups, are all apart of our daily wrap below.
You can see what we learned, along with all the replays, below.
THREE THINGS WE LEARNED FROM DAY 4
NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY THE REAL DEAL
If anyone questioned the championship credentials of New South Wales Country heading into Tuesday’s undefeated clash against South Australia Metro, they were well and truly answered following the 78-59 win.
In one of the tournament’s most entertaining battles to date, the Country boys overcame a slow start to grind out a finals-like victory that could be looked back upon as pivotal come the business end of the championships.
Trailing 20-9 at the first break, they managed to regain the momentum late in the second-quarter and finally pinched the lead with thirty seconds remaining to take a 38-36 lead into the long-break.
A 14-2 run to begin the third-term only extended that lead, which eventually sat at 58-44 at the final change.
SA continued to mount a fightback in the last quarter but enough of the damage had been done for NSW Country to walk away with a third-straight win.
It was an even spread of contributors for the victors, with William Dooley producing a strong double-double (13 points and 15 rebounds) and Samson Nathan also chipping in with 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
It won’t get any easier for NSW Country though, who will head into a second-straight undefeated battle when they face the defending champions Victoria Metro on Wednesday.
TASSIE TOUGHNESS SHINES THROUGH
We know they breed them tough on the Apple Isle and that was clear in Tasmania’s gritty loss to Victoria Country on Tuesday.
The Tassie girls battled wilfully throughout the clash but will be left to rue a slow start that ultimately cost them in the 73-63 defeat.
A dominating first-quarter from Victoria had them out to a big 23-9 lead at the first-break before Tasmania started its fightback.
A 0/6 start to the second-quarter from Victoria opened a window for Tasmania to strike, scoring four early points before their Bass Strait rivals finally got on the board, with a 9-0 run to end the term cutting the margin to 12 at half-time.
Tasmania carried that momentum into the opening minutes of the third-term, with a Chloe Neate jump shot followed by lay-ups from captain Elka Hutton and Brydee Mcpherson getting them within striking distance.
Victoria rallied once again before Tasmania could take advantage, dragging the margin back from six to 10 points, before their own mini-run extended that to a 15-point lead at the final break.
While that ultimately proved to be a margin too great to overcome, Tassie continued to challenge throughout the final quarter and eventually outscored the Vics 19-14.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA CHALK UP FIRST-WIN THRILLER
While Tuesday’s match between Tasmania and Western Australia Country may have looked like a game to skip on paper – given both hadn’t notched up a victory yet – it proved to be anything but.
In arguably the game of the tournament thus far, it was the country boys from the west that won their first game by the barest of margins – 71-70.
The dying stages of the contest proved to be where the game was won and lost.
With WA Country up by three in the final seconds, a turnover allowed Tasmania one final chance at victory.
Cooper Baker was then fouled for Tasmania, with one of his two free throws finding the hole to cut the margin to two.
A Kobe Birch jumper on the rebound then appeared to ice the game before a hail mary three from Baker in the corner gave the Tassie lads one last shot at victory.
But despite some strong defensive, time ran out seconds later with WA full of celebrations and the Tasmanians still searching for a win.

PREVIEW
Two undefeated boys sides will get a big test of their tournament credentials when they face off on day three of the Basketball Australia U16 National Championships.
KommunityTV will exclusively live stream 13 matches across three courts from 10am AEST on Tuesday.
The NSW Country boys have notched two dominant wins so far but but their biggest test yet will come when they tackle an equally impressive South Australia Metro at 2pm.
Their clash will be one of the headline acts on Court 1 after NSW seriously turned up the head in a 124-55 thrashing of Queensland North on Monday.
William Dooley recorded 19 points and 15 boards while Logan Tupaea (18 points), Owen Howes (14), Noah Fenton (13) and Samson Nathan (11) all chipped in during the scoring frenzy.
It backed up the Blues’ 96-68 defeat over Western Australia Country to open the tournament.
SA Metro will likely prove a tougher opening with the Reds having also heavily beaten Queensland North before edging past Tasmania.
On the girls side of the draw, SA Country will be the latest side attempting to stop a rampaging Victoria Metro outfit in its tracks.
The Victorians have breezed past NSW Metro and WA Metro in their two clashes so far but the plucky SA side will be out to make sure this encounter is not as easy.
Every match of the Basketball Australia Under-16 and National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from Juy 5-13.
It is the third of five national junior pathways events on the Basketball Australia calendar, following the under-20 and under-18 nationals earlier this year.
