There are only be two fights officially confirmed, but The Big Fights 37 is set to be an unmissable fight card at Toowoomba’s Rumours International on November 8.
The night will be headlined by Pittsworth star Jackson ‘Stoneleigh’ Griffiths, who is set to face his toughest challenge in the ring yet as he will lock horns with Mexico’s Miguel Vasquez.
The duo will fight for the currently vacant WBC Grand Champion Belt in a fight which could propel the Darling Downs boxer to international stardom.
“We are very proud to be able to bring this opportunity for him (Griffiths), he’s certainly going to have his work cut out,” promoter Brendon Smith said.
“There’s a lot of experience in front of him and Stoneleigh is only rising through, he’s a young prospect but we believe he’s good enough to do it.
“I believe Stoneleigh is something very special in the making and I believe with the hard work and dedication he’s probably the best prospect in the country to become a world champion in time.
“We had a meeting a little while ago and he really wants to give the fight game a red-hot crack and this is what we’re delivering him.
“He’s now ranked 35 in the world from his win in the Youth Title and the Australasian Title, I believe this is a big chance of putting him inside the top 20 or 15 and we just have to keep going.
“He’s a young Pittsworth lad that only put on gloves three years ago and his idol was Canelo Alvarez and is now about to fight the man that has fought him twice.”
The Griffiths camp is well aware of the challenge they face, with Vasquez boasting unrivalled experience and power.
“He’s fought more world champions than Jackson has had fights, there’s so many big names on Vasquez’s resume and he’s very well known around the world,” Smith said.
The second confirmed fight on the card will see Goondiwindi’s Jed Morris take on Dan Murray in a battle for the vacant Australian Super Middleweight Title.
Murray handed Morris his only professional defeat in his eight-bout career back in April which is set to bring an extra incentive for both fighters as they rematch for the Australian title.
Smith was excited to bring his next Big Fights night back to Rumours International and with more blockbuster fights still to be announced, he expects November 8 to go down in Toowoomba boxing history.
“We had some massive fights up there, we have been able to deliver some big names into that venue over time,” Smith said.
“We delivered the rematch of Graham Earl and Michael Katsidis, which was the fight of the year and round of the decade.
“We had and Herman (Ene-Purcell) fight in Rumours, we’ve had Tim Tszyu fight in Rumours.
“There’s a lot of history in Rumours International and this one’s up there with them all, this is one of our biggest ones in quite some time.”
