AUSSIE RULES: Had University fielded a team in 2020, Gabe Robbie might’ve never ended up donning the sash for the Bombers.

Such was the fortuity for the preliminary finalists, they were able to jag the competition’s premier new recruit of the Allied Pickfords Cup season.

Moving to Toowoomba to be closer to his partner, the former Sydneysider enjoyed a long career with Sydney University, which was leaning him to a stint with the Cougars.

“I moved to be with my partner here for uni. She’s just about finished and I landed a good job,” Robbie said.

“I had it in my head that I’d play for University because of the (Sydney Uni) connection.

“When they were out, I googled the closest club to me, and Heritage Oval wasn’t far.”

Robbie has slotted into the Bombers forward line with aplomb, kicking 40 goals from eight outings to take the mantle as the competition’s leading goalscorer.

He credits feeling at home with South Toowoomba as a leading contributor, as well keeping in shape over the lockdown period.

“I feel really good here, and everyone has made me feel at home,” he said.

“I’ve felt welcomed since day one and have made a lot of mates.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to get some goals on the end of a few big wins. As a full forward this year I’ve felt pretty good.

“I kept myself in shape and worked pretty hard through the lay-off.

“I’ve kicked pretty straight through the year too. There’s been games where I’ve missed everything in the warm-up, but hit the mark in the game itself.”

Robbie and the Bombers are prepared for their toughest test of the season tomorrow, as they face off with Coolaroo for a spot in next weekend’s grand final.

South Toowoomba scored a 35-point victory when the two sides met in round seven, but the forward is wary of their opponents.
“It should be a really good game. I watched them play last week and they were very good,” he said.

“We’ll have our best side, they’ll have their best side. This is what you play footy for, to win flags and the ultimate prize.”
