RUGBY LEAGUE: Valleys Fillies had history in their hands and let it slip.
But while the result of their first A-grade game may not be the one they wanted, their mood remains positive.
Speaking after the Fillies 18-16 loss to Souths-Logan yesterday, team manager Janet Suey had high praise for side.
"They were right in it until the very end," Suey said.
"We were actually leading 16-14 with two minutes to go before we turned over the ball and they scored out wide.
"The girls were excellent. They really came together as a team, they gelled together, played well as a unit and it was just a little case of nerves that cost us in the end.
"We've got a few girls who aren't just new to the team, they're new to the game but everyone battled until the end."
Suey was particularly impressed with how well the team performed in defence.
"I thought we were the better team in defence," she said.
"Unfortunately we turned it over a little too much.
"That meant we were defending but we worked hard and played well."
The Fillies halves pairing also earned praise - making the most of their rare opportunities to shine with the ball in hand.
"I thought our halves were great," Suey said.
"We we had the ball we were excellent - Emily (Young) and Rosie (Parsons) did a really good job.
"Nisa Pengilly was also good for us. She was named Players' Player at the end of the game."
Heading into their next match Suey believes communication will be the key to tightening up their performance.
"We were probably just a little bit quite," she said.
"I think if we work on and improve our communication that will help reduce a few of the errors."
