TRIATHLON: With little more than a year of experience under her belt, Hannah Pollock already has the makings of a triathlon star.
The young Fairholme College student beat some of the state’s best triathletes to win gold in the 13-14 years Queensland School Sport Triathlon Championship at the weekend.
Pollard finished the 300m swim, 10km ride and 2km run legs of the Hervey Bay course in about 35 minutes.
“I started with duathlons – which is a run, swim, run – when I was little,” Pollock said.
“When that stopped I transitioned to triathlons and after I did my first one I loved it.
“I was actually quite surprised when I came through with the gold medal – it was a good surprise.”
On average Pollock trains 11 times a week, but the Year 8 girls says a positive mindset is also vital to being a good triathlete.
“A lot of it has to do with your mind,” she said.
“To be a good triathlete you have to want it, training is important, but you have to want to be out there and doing the work and when I’m competing I try to find a reason to push a little more when it starts to hurt.
“I also think about my family and how much they love me when I race.”
