FOOTBALL: An Alex Dyball double has helped USQ secure a 3-1 win over Rockville.
Brought on as a second half substitute, Dyball scored in 68th and 81st minutes after the teams went into halftime locked at 1-1.
The match started at a frantic pace with both teams creating plenty of chances before USQ found the back of the net first.
"The game was quite quick to begin with," USQ FC coach Matt Proctor said.
"We created quite a few chances in the first 20 minutes before Aaron Wieden opened the scoring for us in the 23rd minute.
"I thought we could've scored a few more but we went into halftime square. Rockville's goal just before halftime was a peach of a shot."
The pace of the game settled after halftime before Proctor changed things up with a number of timely substitutions.
"Alex is just one of the players who has earned his jersey and his opportunity based on recent performances," Proctor said.
"We bought 11 new players into the team last week against Warwick. We fought hard for a 5-0 win and the players that got the job then earned the right to keep their jersey this week.
"They and a few other players got the job done against Rockville and now other players will need to fight to earn their spots back."
Proctor said preparation and respect had been key to his side's performances this season.
"The ladder is very deceptive," he said.
"It's very challenging because everyone is fighting for a win every week and every team has improved as the season has progressed.
"You have to treat every team and game on face value, giving them the respect they deserve. Each week we're focused on the game and the challenge in front of us - we're not looking beyond that."
Gatton was also impressive in round 14. The Redbacks fought back from a goal down at halftime to secure a 4-1 win over Warwick extending their unbeaten run to five games.
Redbacks player Adam Halstead said he was impressed by his team's spirit after they suffered injuries to several key players in the match.
