RUGBY LEAGUE: Things are starting to build nicely out in Dalby.
Two pre-season victories have given the Diehards confidence as they prepare for the start of the TRL Premiership season.
Their next test comes on Saturday in a game that means much more than the scoreline, when they face off with Dalby’s Risdon Cup team, the Wheatmen.
The two play for the Matt Hughes Charity Shield on a day that raises funds for local charities in Dalby, something that Diehards coach Kerry Carmichael said was close to their hearts.
“What a great bloke Matt was,” he said.
“We’ve turned it into a charity day and we’re hoping to raise around $50,000 which all goes into local charities in the community.”
That Dalby connection is something the club has focused on in 2021, with a number of juniors making their way through the grades to the top level.
“We haven’t gone chasing too many players this year,” Carmichael said.
“We have enough locals and a couple of new younger players coming through. Their attitude has been fantastic.
“Travis Babington has come through our junior system and every time he touches the ball you feel like something will happen. His communication at training has been great.
“The likes of Ryan Welsh will get their shot at A-grade this year, and Harry Skinner is another coming through.
“If these young guys can stick around, it will make the club very strong going forward.”
While content with the results of wins over Brighton and Jandowae, Carmichael said the team’s approach to the games has been the most pleasing aspect.
“I don’t look too much into trial results, but you can look into attitude, and ours was fantastic,” he said.
“Every bloke on the paddock played well and with an intent and enthusiasm.
“You like to see that, particularly early in the year, when other teams are trying to find their feet it can help you in the opening three or four rounds.”
