CRICKET: The Toowoomba Girls Cricket Hub won a major award earlier this year.
Named Community Cricket Initiative of the Year at Queensland Cricket's inaugural Queensland Sports For All awards night, the hub had more than 50 girls playing in the Toowoomba junior cricket competition.
The hub, which was formed by a group of parents and coaches, is not resting on its laurels though.
"Our initial goal was to have about 20 players,” Toowoomba Cricket girls co-ordinator Graham Strang said.
"We ended up with more 50. We had five all-girls teams in the Toowoomba cricket competition.
"This year we'd like to have that number up around 80.”
The Hub, which will host a come and try day on Sunday, August 26 at USQ, was formed last season to help introduce more young girls to cricket.
"We group girls of similar age and skill levels into teams,” Strang said.
"Those teams then compete in Toowoomba cricket competition.
"Cricket is a game of skill - it's not just about strength.
"We (the Hub) have a lot of great coaches and we teach all the girls the skills they need to enjoy the game.
"All our teams last season we very competitive.
"We had number of girls who made their Queensland debuts in indoor cricket and quite a few who played for Darling Downs.”
Strang said anyone girl interested in joining the Hub or learning about cricket could attend the come and try day.
"We will have a number of representatives from the Hub and Queensland Cricket there on the day,” Strang said.
"There will be a lot of fun activities for them to try out.
"It's just a fun day to introduce them to cricket.”
Girls who go on to play for the club don't have to worry about stocking their cricket bag either.
"Right from the start we had a lot of support from Toowoomba Cricket and a lot of clubs,” Strang said.
"Every one of our teams has its own kit - bats, helmets, pads and gloves are all provided.”
The Come and Try day will run from 10am-1pm Sunday, August 26 at the USQ Cricket Oval on Baker St.
