LEAGUE: Toowoomba’s dominance at the 47th Battalion Trophy Carnival has been rewarded.

The Clydesdales (men) and Mustangs (women) won their respective competitions and several players from each side were named in the carnival merit teams.

Up against Sunshine Coast Falcons in the final, the Clydesdales started in blistering fashion.

Dwayne Duncan followed up his own midfield bomb to score in the first set of six before tries to Dylan Chow and Craig Donn secured a 14-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes.

Walter Lauenstein scored on the stroke of halftime to reduce the gap to 14-4.

Stepping up their defence after the break, the Falcons dominated the second half.

Five-eighth David Oakes got them back in the game at 14-0 with 10 minutes before player of the final Cory McGrady capped off a mesmerising 70m raid for the Clydesdales to make it 20-12.

The Falcons got it back to 20-16 late and had chances to win the match but the Clydesdales held on.

The Mustangs were equally impressive in the women’s competition.

After starting their campaign with an impressive 42-0 win over Gladstone they backed it up with 46-6 defeat of Central Highlands.

The Clydesdales David Armstrong was named player of the carnival.
