AUSSIE RULES: Who knows if it was the ‘sense of occasion’ or the ‘cold weather’ but for the first half South Toowoomba Bombers did not look like a premiership hopeful team at the weekend.
A win for University Cougars would’ve helped them close the gap on AFLDD Allied Cup leaders Coolaroo, but the Bombers had other ideas despite being kept scoreless in the first quarter.
Trailing 20-16 at halftime, Bombers blitzed Cougars in the third quarter to secure a 6.7-43 to 3.4-22 lead at the final break.
“We didn’t play to our structure, strengths or game plan in the first two quarters,” Bombers coach Nathan Stewart said.
“I don’t know why but it looked like the boys weren’t backing themselves or each other as well.
“I wasn’t too worried though. I felt it was really just a matter of getting back to what has been working for us all season.
“Once we did that we were able to turn it around and take the win.”
A few words at halftime from Brownlow medallist and Bombers’ small forward for the day Jason Akermanis also helped a lot.
“He (Akermanis) and a few of our senior players had a lot to say at halftime and the team responded well,” Stewart said.
“He (Akermanis) had a good idea of a game plan before the game and his insight and experience helped.
“Being able to watch him in action and having a player of his experience in the team was fantastic.
“I know all our players, our small forwards in particular, have benefited from this and will use most of the things learned throughout the rest of their playing careers.
Akermanis kicked three goals in Bombers 10.9-69 to 4.6-46 win.
