Toowoomba Tigers come out on top in AFL Darling Downs Pride Game

Toowoomba Tigers have maintained their unbeaten women’s season with their first success in the AFLDD Pride Game. Check out The Chronicle’s full gallery from the massive event.

AUSSIE RULES: Toowoomba has ended its Pride Game drought in style, taking down South Toowoomba in the annual fixture of the AFL Darling Downs.

The undefeated Tigers ran out 6.12 (48) to 1.1 (7) winners at Rockville Park, on a day honouring the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community to the sport.

“It was quite a good day,” Tigers coach Neville Jericho said.

“The ground was painted and there was a bit of noise coming from the crowd.

“I think it will become a bit more prominent and other teams will take it on as well.”

On the field it was the Tigers that were at their electrifying best to open up a gap at the top of the standings.

“Score wise we were pretty happy, but with accuracy probably not,” Jericho said.

“We controlled the play for most of the day. but weren’t at our most accurate. Souths played well and certainly contested the ball well.

“It was good to get our first win in the Pride Game.”

Jericho praised the efforts of the team’s young core, with a few standout efforts across the park.

“Lauren Fraser was a standout. She was in everything. Carrying the ball and tackling, she’s a trooper. She’s only young but had a super game,” he said.

“Kaitlyn Zelinski dominated the midfield and Lara Paget ended up with three goals and played well up forward.”

The South Toowoomba men cleared out in second spot on the ladder after downing the Tigers by 54 points.

Gabe Robbie continued his impeccable form in front of goal with four majors.

They sit 10 points clear on the standings in front of Dalby, who accounted for University by 50 points.

Coolaroo remains on top by a wide margin after going down to Goondiwindi and taking down the Hawks by 117 points.
