INDOOR BOWLS: Angus Young secured a memorable gold medal at the recent Australian Indoor Bowls Championships.
Representing Queensland in the pairs division, Young and team-mate Nelson Thomas were unbeaten on their road to victory.
"The opportunity to represent your state is something really special,” Young said.
"Winning all nine of our games was great.
"It's a pretty rare achievement particularly in pairs competition - we were up against some quality opposition.”
It was also a somewhat unique experience for Young.
"I've teamed up with Nelson before,” Young said.
"In the past I've been skip but this time round he was in charge.
"He's a great player and it's good to team up with him.
"We're both real competitors and work well together.
"We approach the game very similarly.
"I think we won because we were able to control our games and play the big shots when it mattered.”
The indoor carpets at Caloundra, where the championships were held, are a far cry from where Young first took up the sport.
"I watched a lot outdoor bowls, the Jack High TV show, when I was a kid,” Young said.
"I was really interested in it and tried a few games, but I found out Nobby had indoor bowls I tried my hand at it.
"I instantly enjoyed the sport and the competition so I stuck with it.”
Having represented his home town of Nobby for several years, Young now represents Drayton.
"They've been a really big help,” Young said.
"They're a great play, very supportive and there's a good atmosphere.”
With the Australian title in the bag Young now turns his attention to Australian selection.
"The squad of 24 will be narrowed down to 14 players after a camp in Sydney in January,” he said.
"That team will then compete in the Trans Tasman series in New Zealand.”
