The Brisbane outfit reigned supreme at the QRFSU 17-18 years Boys State Championship unbeaten – defeating Sunshine Coast 14-10 in the grand final.
Harri Armstrong and Marley Ngatai were the key men for Met Easts, scoring their side’s tries, with Seamus Boakes converted both efforts.
Highfields Sport Park played host to the championships titles which featured some of schoolboy rugby’s top players from across the state.
“I have been amazed by just how skilful some of these young men are,” Darling Downs regional school sports officer Lyndon McIntyre said. “They’re tremendous young athletes.
“And the level of sportsmanship displayed has been absolutely first class.
“They shake hands at the end, there are no harsh words across the fields. It’s really played in a fantastic spirit and they’re very gracious to in terms of thanking the officials and referees.”
DAY ONE
A pair of coastal raiders laid down ominous markers on day one of the 17-18 years boys Rugby Union State Championships.
Sunshine Coast and South Coast opened their respective accounts with massive wins at Highfields Sports Park.
Peninsula had no answer to the Sunshine Coast juggernaut in a 76-0 loss and South Coast beat Wide Bay 73-12.
Regional heroes Darling Downs were not so fortunate as their coast counterparts in their opener – losing 22-12 to South Coast.
Darling Downs battled gamely in the defeat – forcing South Coast onto the back foot throughout.
“We showed a lot of heart as a team.
“We had two tries scored against us early and we could’ve given up there but we didn’t, we almost got the comeback and just missed out on the bonus.
“Our lineout was a strength and overall I thought we held together pretty well.”
Unfortunately for the Downs their second match of the day was against the championship’s other early contenders – the Sunshine Coast.
Leading 15-14 for a significant period the Downs eventually lost 27-15.
