Former Brisbane Lions AFL player Matt Eagles is facing the prospect of being deregistered unless he can overturn a striking charge.
Eagles is currently a member of the Redland Victoria Point QAFL side and was charged with striking during his round 7 clash against the Aspley Hornets on May 17.
He was charged with a three-game suspension for striking and has now exceeded the 16 games of accumulated suspensions threshold, resulting in an automatic deregistration from all competitions.
Eagles would be forced to wait 12 months before he can apply to re-register with any team if the verdict is upheld.
“Redland Victoria Point player Matt Eagles was found guilty of striking at the AFL Queensland Tribunal on Wednesday evening,” an AFL Queensland statement said.
“This guilty verdict has taken Eagles to 17 match suspensions with respect to on-field offences.
“This disciplinary history has resulted in Eagles exceeding the deregistration threshold.
“Any person deregistered is prohibited from participating in any Australian rules football competition, as per the National Community Football Policy Handbook.”
However, he will have the chance to appeal his striking charge to keep his hopes of playing this season alive.
Eagles first rose to fame in 2016, where he was the winner of season two of The Recruit TV show and signed a contract with the Brisbane Lions.
He went on to play six games at AFL level between 2018 and 2020 and reached cult hero status within the club before he was delisted at the end of the 2020 season.
