FOOTBALL: September is usually reserved for swooping magpies, but the black and white “bombers” swooped early at the weekend.
Willowburn enjoyed a President’s Cup day to remember – winning three of the four finals they lined up in.
The club’s under-23 men’s team kicked off proceedings with a convincing 4-0 win over rivals West Wanderers.
The result came just a week after both sides battled to standstill in a 1-1 draw.
“It was great game – a really good result,” Willowburn goalscorer Elsadig Mohamed said.
“We were expecting a tough game because Wanderers are a very good team and we drew with them 1-1 last week.
“Before the game we talked about going out there – showing we wanted it more and playing for each other.
“I think we did that very well.
“I’m glad we got the win, and while I wasn’t expecting the goal, I don’t really like heading it too much, I’m happy I was able to score and help the team.”
Big game experience ultimately proved to be the difference in Willowburn’s clash with Highfields Gold in the FQPL 3 Women’s match.
With Willowburn skipper Kiama Grey locking down the midfield and defender Sophie Fuller a rock at the back – the Magpies won the important contests.
“I think both sides will admit they didn’t play at the level they normally would,” FQ Darling Downs representative Snow Green said.
“Despite that it was still a very good game.
“The biggest difference was Willowburn held their composure a little more – they have those older experienced players whereas Highfields are a younger side.
“That (Willowburn) experience helped them in the bigger moments during the game and that was all that really separated the two sides.”
The Magpies senior men’s team also had their captain in a seesawing clash with Wanderers.
Skipper Trent Ingleton scored both goals in his side’s 2-1 win.
Unfortunately for the Magpies, Dalby stopped them from recording a perfect Cup round.
The Tigers were impressive in the Division Two men’s clash – running out 3-1 winners.
Chinchilla wins big
Bears clawed out a great win over Rockville Rovers in the Division One men’s final.
The two teams have developed an emotional and at times heated rivalry in recent years, and Sunday’s match was a perfect example.
“They (Rockville) were really on a high and full of energy after scoring the first goal,” Chinchilla’s Ross Cardillo said.
“I thought we did really well to stick with them in the first half because they can be hard to handle when they get in front.
“We went into halftime down 1-0, but we weren’t too worried because we had created some good chances.
“We scored just after the restart and when we got our second it really changed the game.
“They (Rockville) started to drop their heads and we lifted as a team.
“It was a great performance from the boys and an important win for us – not just because it’s a trophy.
“We’ve had some big games against Rockville lately, and this win gives us the ascendancy I think.”
