NT police will increase road patrols in the lead up to Christmas after a woman was killed and four children rushed to hospital following a remote crash on Friday.

How to drive safely on Territory roads

Police have announced they will increase road patrols in the lead up to the festive season following the death of a 20-year-old woman near Numbulwar on Friday.

The woman died after her LandCruiser rolled 6km from the town on Numbulwar Rd, bringing the NT’s road toll for the year to 27.

Commander Danny Bacon said while the figure was lower than last year’s total of 46, it was still “quite significant” for the Northern Territory.

“We recently lost a 20-year-old woman at Numbulwar on Friday, within that car were five other persons that quite likely could have been another six fatalities,” he said.

“Every single one of those deaths is preventable, they really are and at the moment we have 27 people that won’t be spending Christmas with their family and their friends,

“We want to make sure that there’s more people spending time with their loved ones this Christmas and in essence what has been proven to be effective in doing that is having police visible on our roads across the Territory to let people know that we’re out there and encourage people to make sure they do the right thing.”

Commander Bacon also urged the public to drive with caution, listing drink-driving, drug-driving, speeding, fatigue and not wearing a seatbelt as the “fatal five” preventable causes of crashes.

An NT Police spokesman said the latest crash was reported just after 2.30pm Friday with police and Numbulwar health clinic staff attending the scene.

He said the woman was declared dead at the scene, and a male passenger and four children were taken to the local clinic for assessment before CareFlight took the children to Darwin for further treatment.

It is understood the group was travelling from Numbulwar to Ngukurr when the incident occurred.

The road between the two towns was closed while police investigated the crash but has since reopened.

The spokesman urged anyone with information relating to the crash to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number P23318576.
