The drivers involved in a dramatic crash in Darwin’s central business district on Friday were “lucky” to walk away without serious injuries, police say.

A police officer at the scene of the crash who did not want to be named said two cars collided at the intersection of Garramilla Bvd and McMinn St shortly after 10am.

He said one of the drivers lost control of their vehicle and drove down a nearby flight of stairs.

The officer said the car collided with a third car which was parked at the bottom of the stairs.

He said the man was lucky he had been wearing a seatbelt because if he hadn’t, the driver would likely have been “fully ejected” from the car.

Traffic was flowing normally through the intersection by 11am.
