It’s the haircut first rocked by the likes of David Bowie, Rod Stewart and Billy Ray Cyrus, but when it comes to Toowoomba, it seems the mullet has never lost its style.
Questioned by some and admired by others, The Chronicle asked readers to vote for the Toowoomba locals sporting the finest mullets – and the results are now in.
Taking out the crown was Tyson McCarthy, 20, who has been growing his hair for five years.
Initially a joke between his high school mates, Mr McCarthy eventually grew fond of the mullet which now hangs past his shoulder blades.
“At the time there weren’t a lot (of mullets) going around,” he said.
“I wanted to do something a bit different and it wasn’t a long term plan at the start – we just did it for a laugh.”
Following a strict nightly routine, the tradie washes, moisturises and combs his hair every day.
Working as a spray painter, he said the ends of his hair often got caught in paint and wasn’t a practical style when it came to warm summer days.
While Mr McCarthy said he still gets a few looks, the perception of the hairstyle had changed.
The hairstyle has made a roaring comeback in recent years especially with the influence of public figures sporting the look including Melbourne Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen.
“People are a bit more accustomed to it now, but when it first happened they thought I was a wild bloke from out west,” he said.
“It helps having celebrities with mullets like Billy Ray Cyrus – he’s the man.
“Maintaining it actually takes a fair bit of work especially because of my curls.”
