In a shock move, one of the stalwarts of FM radio in Melbourne, Craig Huggins, is exiting Gold FM after 34 years on air at the classic hits station.

His final show will be Friday, April 11.

“I started at 3XY when I was 16 and have been in radio for 43 years,” Huggins said.

“I joined KZ FM, which later became Gold, on May 6, 1991. I am proud to be the last OG from when we changed to Gold 104.3 in October 1991.

“I have had incredible fun at Gold and have worked with the absolute best of the best.

“I have been there for more than half my life and have had some of the major moments in my life there.”

Huggins will leave his gig as host of Gold’s top rating Morning shift to helm Breakfast on Adelaide’s Cruise 1323. In addition he will host Afternoon Drive on 96FM in Perth.

In a twist, Huggins won’t be leaving Melbourne. He will present the Adelaide and Perth shows out of Gold’s Melbourne studios and be a standby announcer for Gold.

Huggins’ exit comes as Gold’s morning, afternoon and drive shifts are networked across Melbourne and Sydney.

Dave ‘Higgo’ Higgins will move from Drive to host Mornings in Melbourne and Sydney.

Toni Tenaglia will be heard hosting Afternoons in both cities and Steve Fitton will host Drive.

Huggins said he would be emotional when he signs off from Gold Mornings for the final time on Friday.

“It has been everything for me,” he said.

“I know a lot of people say they love their job, but I genuinely love going to work. I enjoy presenting a music show, I know my music and I love music and the listeners.”
