A man who once served in the US army before working as a geologist and has been charged after allegedly filming people who were staying at his Townsville home has had his matters progress in court.

Police have alleged William Gerardus Rush Huybregts secretly filmed backpackers by using a motion sensing camera hidden in a bug spray can while they were in the bathroom.

The 47-year-old has been charged with 159 counts of recording in breach of privacy showing the genital region and one count of possessing tainted property.

This week the man’s defence lawyer Anthony Sturgeon appeared on his behalf in Townsville Magistrates Court and said his client had seen a psychologist on February 22 to finalise a psychology report that they were still waiting on.

Mr Sturgeon asked for an adjournment to obtain the psychology report and requested his client’s appearance to be excused on the next mention of the matters.

Magistrate Steven Mosch adjourned the charges to April 19 in Townsville Magistrates Court and enlarged Mr Huybregt’s bail.
