Chaos as suspected stolen car causes multi-car pile up in South Townsville

A witness has recounted the moment a suspected stolen car slammed into his vehicle during a multi-car crash that ended in a dramatic arrest in Townsville.

A witness has recounted the moment a suspected stolen car slammed into his vehicle during a multi-car crash that ended in a dramatic arrest in Townsville.

Police were called to a crash involving four vehicles at the intersection of Dean and Palmer St in South Townsville around 7.30am on Monday.

A man was taken into custody at the crash scene after one of the vehicles involved — a grey Toyota Corolla Hatchback — was suspected to be stolen.

A witness at the scene said the Corrolla rear ended his vehicle at the traffic lights, forcing him to collide with the car in front, which had school kids sitting in the back.

“The driver was wearing gloves and covering his face — that’s when I realised the car might be stolen,” the witness said.

“He tried to get away but I think he realised pretty quickly he was completely surrounded.

“He just sat in the car and the police came and took him away.”

No one involved in the multi-car pile up sustained any serious injuries.

Investigations are ongoing. No charges have been laid at this stage.
