An introduced species of deer poses a risk to motorists in the Townsville region and can cause “extensive damage” to cars, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is warning.
TMR on Friday urged drivers to be alert and to report all sightings of Chital deer in the Charters Towers, Hervey Range and Woodstock-Giru areas.
“We’re monitoring the movements of these unexpected road visitors, and every sighting reported helps pinpoint high-risk locations,” TMR North Queensland Regional Director Ross Hodgman said.
“We’re in the early stages of this work and engagement from the community is pivotal to us collecting as much information as possible on the activity and movements of these deer.”
Adults of the chital deer species stand up to 86 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh up to 90 kilograms.
“The impact of a collision between a vehicles and deer are serious, which is why we’re trying to better understand where these deer are located within our region,” Mr Hodgman said.
“We strongly encourage motorists who frequent the roads in these locations to keep an eye out for deer on their travels”
TMR is monitoring the movements of the deer with every sighting reported helping to pinpoint high-risk locations where safety measures could be implemented.
All deer sightings can be reported to TMR by calling 1800625648 or by sending an email to engagement.northern@tmr.qld.gov.au.
