A young man has applied for bail after he was arrested for allegedly breaking into a couple’s home and watching them be “intimate” after he was told they were lesbians.
On April 19, Matthew Robin Milkins was arrested and let out on bail following the alleged break-in and only hours later allegedly broke into another woman’s home and assaulted her, the court was told.
The 19-year-old was brought into the dock at Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday as his lawyer Anmol Nand from Legal Aid Queensland applied for bail on his behalf.
Police prosecutor Kimberley Rogers-Ford said he committed the alleged first break-in where he watched two females “in an intimate act” after he was told lesbians lived at the home in the Burdekin.
“While on bail he kicks in the front and back door in order to approach the victim in that matter and despite there being a third person, it didn’t deter him,” Ms Rogers-Ford said.
“He goes to assault her and destroys the phone she was using to record what was going on.”
Mr Nand said the young man could be let out on bail under strict conditions which would include having no contact with the alleged victims, curfew and reporting conditions and residing at an address with his parents at a Townsville caravan park.
The court was also told the young man had no criminal history and had been “intoxicated” after going to a party before the alleged break ins.
Prosecutor Ms Rogers-Ford opposed the bail application and explained he had already been on “strict” bail conditions before allegedly committing the second break in.
“It’s quite an extreme fashion,” she said.
“Despite bail, that doesn’t stop Mr Milkins.”
The man’s mother was sitting at the back of court to support him, however the prosecutor told the court his parents would not be taking him back to the family’s home in Victoria and would instead stay in Townsville with him.
“Read in between the lines Your Honour, in my submission, it’s that Mr Milkins’ parents aren’t even really willing to have him at home; they’re not willing to have him come back to Victoria with them,” the prosecutor said.
Mr Milkins has been charged with common assault, enter dwelling and committing an indictable offence, threatening violence and wilful damage.
No pleas have been entered.
Magistrate Cathy McLennan said she believed the conditions imposed on Mr Milkins bail along with a surety of $2500 would sufficiently reduce the risk of his reoffending and granted him bail.
She adjourned the charges to May 6.
