A small town is in mourning after the death of a five-year-old girl following a horrific two-vehicle crash south of Toowoomba on Saturday, as thousands of dollars have been raised for her family.
The girl, a Year One student at Cambooya State School as confirmed by Education Queensland, died of her injuries in hospital following the crash at the intersection of Luck and Newman Roads at Vale View just after 11.30am.
The blue Ford Ranger and gold Subaru, which the girl was a passenger in, were left as wrecks following the collision.
In a statement, a department spokesman said students and staff at Cambooya State School were given access to counsellors and other services to support them.
“The Cambooya State School community is heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of their
Year One students,” he said.
“Our thoughts and sincere sympathies are with her family, friends and loved ones during this
incredibly difficult time.
“Support is being provided to students and staff, and guidance counsellors will remain at the
school for as long as needed.”
It comes as a GoFundMe started to support the family with expenses like funeral costs raised more than $10,000 in less than 24 hours.
This included a $1000 donation by the Cambooya State School’s P and C.
Campaign organiser Glen Johns, who is a friend of the girl’s father, thanked those who had given money.
“This sudden tragedy has left her family facing the unimaginable pain of losing a child,” he wrote.
“In addition to their grief, the family is now confronted with unexpected expenses and other associated costs.
“Thank you all so much for the incredible support over the past 24 hours — we’re already just under halfway to the goal, and the response has been overwhelming.
“Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we’re keeping details minimal, but please know your generosity is making a real difference.”
