A former Toowoomba truckie will be remembered in a national memorial dedicated to the men and women who lost their lives working on Australia’s roads and highways.

Trevor Hourigan was killed in a head-on truck crash on February 19, 2022 at Brewarrina after about 50 years working in the transport industry.

The former Toowoomba man previously worked at the Southern Hotel, and has been remembered as an honest, down-to-earth bloke willing to help anyone.

“He was the person his work peers would call to find out the best way to get to a place,” stepdaughter Samantha Nelson said.

“He was the person that would ask about your family before work stuff. He never held a grudge, he said his piece and that was the end of it.

“Losing him was the toughest thing we as a family have had to endure. He was the rock of our family and will be eternally missed.”

Mr Hourigan’s name will be unveiled on the Lights On The Hill Trucking Memorial this Sunday, one of 59 names of fallen members of the transport industry to be added to the site.

“Trev going on the wall at the LOTH memorial means everything to us, we are proud of him and what he has done in the transport industry,” Ms Nelson said.

“We are proud of the family that has been created because of his job and how well regarded he was.”

Sharon Hourigan said her heart overflowed by the love and support shown by the trucking family, and it was an honour for him to be placed in the memorial.

“I never imagined my life like this,” she said.

“We can’t imagine our lives without him, and though I am so very proud of him, I think (the memorial) is going to be hard because everything will just surface.”

LOTH secretary Juanita Johnson said the memorial ceremony had the ability to give grieving families another chance to farewell their loved ones.

“It’s like another memorial, another funeral and another way of saying goodbye,” she said.

“You become a part of the Lights On The Hill family.”

The LOTH convoy will leave Brown and Hurley on Carrington Road on its way to Gatton Showgrounds from 9.30am Saturday, October 1.

The memorial commemoration at Lake Apex Park will begin at 10am on Sunday, October 2.

Tickets for the Saturday event featuring live music and rides is available online or at the gate.
