A Toowoomba wedding photographer has been named as one of the best in Queensland by the Australian Bridal Industry Academy.

Kat Cherry Photographer was named as the fourth best in the state, with an ABIA customer rating of 99.8%.

The awards were announced this month with the ratings coming from verified married couples on the ABIA website.

Clients rate each business on the four pillars of perfection, quality of product, quality of service, value for money and attitude of staff.

Ms Cherry is based in Toowoomba but travels for her work, capturing weddings all across Australia.

She is passionate about capturing natural, and in-the-moment wedding images.

“I love weddings and the challenge of photographing them,” she said.

“I aim to create memories for each person as an individual. I don’t go in with this same approach for everyone because each couple is unique.

“A wedding is a representation of a couple and it’s amazing to be able to capture all different types of love stories.”

Ms Cherry photographs everything from small elopements to big grand days, and attends about 30 weddings a year.

“Covid certainly chucked a spanner in the works last year but while we didn’t have a lot of work happening, there were lots of lessons to be learned,” she said.

“It taught us in the industry to stay connected and show couples that adjustments can be made and there is no need to stress about the small things and to just fully enjoy your day for what it is.”

It’s not the first time Ms Cherry has made it to ABIA’s top wedding photographers in Queensland list, with her featuring each year since 2015.

She said it was a good feeling knowing her clients thought highly of her work.

“Im a person who stays really humble but it’s nice to know what I do is appreciated,” she said.

“Photography is a very competitive industry and for me I get through by being authentic and aiming to improve all the time.”

ABIA’s suggestion on what to look for in a wedding photographer

  • Style. Many photographers are well-known for capturing images in a certain style. Think about the feel of your wedding and whether a particular photographer might be better for your wedding style.
  • Personality. Wedding photographers should be able to make you feel relaxed in front of the camera, so it’s essential to find someone who can help you feel at ease. You may want to meet them beforehand so you can find out if you get along.
  • Location. Is your chosen photographer based within your area, or are they willing to travel.
  • Photo ideas. If you have any particularly notable photo ideas for your wedding day, can they help you to achieve it? Be forward and make your photographer aware of these before you hire them.
