Students gather for 2021 school captains’ and leaders’ morning tea

Darling Dows students unite for the mayor and councillors morning tea for secondary school captains and leaders.

STUDENT leaders from across the Darling Downs gathered in Highfields on Thursday morning for the mayor and councillors morning tea for secondary school captains and leaders.

Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio’s main message to students was to “work hard and believe in themselves” and encouraged them to lead with pride and dedication this year.

“Schooling is an important part of one’s life and it very often gives you the direction and the opportunity that you never thought you had,” he said.

Student leaders from 25 secondary schools joined the annual mayor and councillors’ function at the Highfields Cultural Centre to recognise their leadership roles in 2021.

New members of council’s 2021 regional youth leaders program were also welcomed into their leadership roles at the event.

Cr Antonio said it was a great honour to recognise the achievements of the 2021 school leaders and the future leaders of our region.

“It’s a very exciting time for our community, particularly for our future leaders of this great region,” Cr Antonio said.

“The schooling journey presents boundless opportunities to students who are willing to work hard and believe in themselves.

“We’re seeing immense change and growth and it’s inspiring to see the enthusiasm of our next generation of leaders and young citizens.

“It was a pleasure to meet with our young people this morning and I’m sure our future is in great hands.”

In addition to representatives from Toowoomba Secondary schools, leaders and teaching staff attended from Clifton State High School, Crows Nest State School, Highfields State Secondary College, Oakey State High School and Pittsworth State High School.

Student leaders Raphael Badman and Mia Knapman (Mary MacKillop Catholic College), Aiden Brister and Lurlene Langton (good Samaritan College) and Toowoomba Grammar School’s Paul Draheim addressed the function.
