Severe storms, heavy rain expected in the region this afternoon

High humidity and a lingering trough system have provided the perfect conditions for heavy rainfall in the region. Here’s when you can expect the showers and storms.

Autumn Weather Outlook: La Nina climate driver set to continue

A lingering trough system paired with humid conditions could bring storms and up to 40mm of rainfall to the region this week, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The BOM forecast has predicted a 95 per cent chance of rain today in Toowoomba, with heavy showers likely to build in the region this afternoon.

There is also a chance Stanthorpe could see up to 80mm of rainfall over the next few days.

“We do have a trough that lies within the region at the moment and there’s reasonably high moisture too which means there’s a chance of storms most days this week,” BOM meteorologist James Thompson said.

“Today or on Wednesday holds the best chance of decent rainfall. This afternoon we have the chance of a severe thunderstorm at some stage especially through the western Darling Downs, into the central Darling Downs.

“With the moisture around, if you do get a thunderstorm you could see 20mm to 40mm of rain in the region.”

Mr Thompson said the storms would extend throughout the region, from Charleville to southeast Queensland.

“The trough that’s causing these storms isn’t moving too much over the next few days, so we’ll see storms in the same areas,” he said.

“(The storms) will most likely be during the afternoon and evening hours, and it will be mostly clear in the morning.

“The weekend looks less likely for storms but it’s a little early for specific forecasts.”

Mr Thompson said conditions would remain “fairly warm” despite the overcast weather.

“We’re expected a top of 29 degrees tomorrow and then 30 on Wednesday,” he said.

“There will be a bit more cloud on Thursday, so we’re expecting a top of 28 degrees.

“It’s warm and humid which are the perfect ingredients for these storms.”
