A Grand Central Shopping Centre security guard snapped and unleashed on a 14-year-old boy and hyis friends who were allegedly causing trouble at the popular shopping destination, a court has heard.

Farman Shahwan Jarullah Jarullah, 24, pleaded guilty in Toowoomba Magistrate Court on Wednesday July 10 to assault occasioning bodily harm and two counts of common assault.

The court heard all three charges related to an incident on March 18, 2024 outside Grand Central shopping centre in Toowoomba involving the defendant, a 14-year-old boy, 14-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy.

Police prosecutor Anita Page told the court Jarullah, employed as a security guard for the centre at the time, had asked the trio to leave, the 14-year-old boy and Jarullah then began pushing each other before Jarullah punched the boy in the face, knocking him to the ground.

While the boy was down, Jarullah kicked him again in the face and stomped on his head.

The 14-year-old girl then began kicking Jarullah before he swung around and kicked her in the stomach, sending her to the ground and then pushed the 13-year-old boy into a nearby fence.

Ms Page said members of the public told Jarullah to stop after which he yelled “you’re a mother f**ker” at the children and gave them the middle finger.

The 14-year-old boy told police he had sustained a bloody nose, cut lip and dizziness lasting two days following the attack.

While no longer working at Grand Central shopping centre, Jarullah still works as a security guard for clubs and pubs.

Defence solicitor Chris Neville told the court although his client had acted “over the top” his action were not unprovoked.

“This is a constant thing he has to deal with; these young people are making trouble, they’ll run through the centre, the security guards chase them to get them out of there then they are subjected to racial slurs and religious slurs,” Mr Neville said.

“It’s something that seems to have gotten out of hand very quickly.”

He added Jarullah struggled with trauma from his time fighting in the Iraq army as a teenager.

Acting magistrate Mark Schofield said the offending was “incredibly serious”.

“I have no doubts and I accept that you would’ve experienced unimaginable horrors during (your time in Iraq),” Mr Schofield said.

“A punch to a 14-year-old by someone who’s a trained security guard is wildly out of line but (Jarullah) then followed it up kicking him in the head and stomping and then assaulting two people who came to his aid.

Jarullah was granted a six month wholly suspended sentence for the assault occasioning bodily harm and placed under a 12-month period of probation for both common assault charges.

The suspended sentence will hold for 12 months.
