JUST over 250 people have stayed at the Queensland Government’s controversial 500-bed Wellcamp quarantine hub since the facility opened its gates almost three months ago.
The hub has, for the majority of its operational period, been used by a small number of people, with 53 people staying there as at March 23.
Soon the facility will have 1000 beds available.
Wagner Corporation director Denis Wagner confirmed to The Chronicle the unveiling of the additional 500 beds was scheduled for early April.
But Mr Wagner said the final date for the new beds would depend on weather conditions.
In February it was revealed taxpayers forked out $48.8m on capital costs for the quarantine hub.
A Queensland Government spokeswoman confirmed just over half the beds have been used in under two months.
“Queensland Regional Accommodation Centre has provided accommodation to just over 250 quarantine and isolation guests,” the spokeswoman said.
During that time, guests have included international travellers, mariners and other guests requiring isolation accommodation needs.
“Throughout this pandemic, the Palaszczuk Government has always ensured we are prepared for whatever might come,” the spokeswoman said.
“The Queensland Regional Accommodation Centre will allow us to tackle what comes next and continue to keep Queenslanders safe.
“The Queensland Government has a 12 month lease agreement with the Wagners, with an option to extend this for at least another year.”
The Queensland Government has previously offered the facility to residents displaced by flooding earlier in the year.
That offer was endorsed by Toowoomba mayor Paul Antonio.
“I think that’s a good idea, if it’s only going to be temporary and the separation can take place and is easily attainable,” Mr Antonio said.
