Transport and Main Roads Queensland has announced a project to develop better walk and bike paths in the Toowoomba CBD.

The Toowoomba Central Active Transport Link will create a key link between the CBD and Highfields and offer an alternative route to the New England Highway.

The development will give locals the chance to cycle or walk through quiet streets, green parks, and the railway corridor making for an easier and more relaxing form of transportation.

So far, a concept design has been developed for 5.5km of transport routes between East Creek Cycleway at Margaret Street and the future Highfields Bikeway at the John French VC Bridge, but the project is still in its planning stage.

The project is funded by the Queensland Government for a total investment of $1.52 million and is part of the Queensland Cycling Strategy and Queensland Walking Strategy.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads said the development project would improve network efficiency, reduce travel times, increase active transport options, be accessible, and improve safety.

The project planning is expected to be completed in 2026.
