Ponie Carmen Price faces Toowoomba Magistrates Court for possessing, supplying cannabis

The 29-year-old copped a significant fine for having 200g of cannabis. See why no conviction was recorded.

Should Cannabis be legal in Australia?

A 29-year-old Toowoomba woman found with 200g of cannabis at her home has avoided having a conviction recorded, but not a sizeable fine.

Ponie Carmen Price had no criminal history at all before appearing in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday where she pleaded guilty to possessing and supplying cannabis, possessing drug utensils and ammunition.

Police prosecutor Kinsley Weir told the court the items were found during a police search of Price’s Toowoomba home on the afternoon of December 15, 2022.

Senior Constable Weir said the search found several amounts of cannabis throughout the home which amounted to about 200g along with number empty clip seal bags, a grinder and scissors used for chopping up leaf and some shotgun and .22 cartridges.

A check of Price’s phone found a text message referring to the supply of cannabis to another person though she told police she couldn’t remember whether she had actually supplied the drug or not, she said.

Price’s solicitor Claire Graham, of Skuse Graham Lawyers, told the court her client instructed she was not addicted to the drug but used cannabis sporadically.

These were early pleas of guilty, her client had no criminal history at all and was employed and accepted the fine would be significant, she said.

Magistrate Louise Shephard ordered the convictions not be recorded and fined Price $1200.
