By day Liz Woolf is a dedicated nurse at St Andrews Hospital but for a few evenings each week this 28-year-old takes to the pole to show Toowoomba women how to reach new heights.
Ms Woolf said growing up, competitive and team sports never interested her but after one pole fitness lesson for her sister’s hens party in 2013 she was hooked.
“I was instantly addicted,” she said.
“I love how you can always be achieving new little goals and pushing yourself to achieve something bigger and better than before.”
After a few months of beginner lessons Ms Woolf joined the community at Toowoomba Pole Fitness, becoming an instructor herself after a few years.
“There are still a lot of misconceptions from people when I tell them I’m a pole instructor,” she said.
“Don’t get me wrong there’s nothing wrong with the sexier side of pole dancing but when it comes to the fitness side of pole, it’s all about pushing your body to achieve incredible feats of strength.
“It’s not necessarily about looking or being stereotypically ‘sexy’ but there’s still a lot of body positivity and confidence boosting involved.”
Ms Woolf recently had the opportunity to show off her super skills at this year’s Pole Expressions competition in Brisbane, returning home with a third place in the amateur open division.
“I sent in my application video last minute so I didn’t expect to be accepted let alone receive a place,” she said.
Ms Woolf said she’s a firm believer everybody can pole dance.
“No matter how big or small you are, how old you are or your back ground, pole is for everyone,” she said.
“I think it comes down to the fact that when you are at your strongest, you also feel your sexiest and for me that’s what pole fit is all about.”
