Generous birthday boy gives back to the Toowoomba community

He might only be 10 years old, but this kind Toowoomba boy has already learnt true happiness in this life is achieved when you are able to give wholeheartedly to others.

INSTEAD of spending his 10th birthday playing with friends, eating cake and opening presents, Onkarveer Singh Khalsa decided to spend his day giving back to those who are forced to go without food and shelter most days of the year.

“Normally my parents always make my birthday a very special day for me but this year I wanted to do something different,” he said.

“We decided to do to Tony’s Kitchen and donate food instead.”

Onkarveer explained that in the Sikh faith it was important to provide for others less fortunate.

“In my religion we try to provide food and shelter to those without so my dad and I took down hotdogs and 200 cans of coke to hopefully cheer someone up at Tony’s Kitchen,” he said.

“They do a lot for the community and it was nice to be able to do something to help on my birthday.”

Tony’s Kitchen is now located in a brand new premises just down the road from the old soup kitchen, at 174a James St.

The kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities are open seven days a week, 364 days a year from 4.30-6.30pm every day.
