Tony’s Community Kitchen has been handing out hot meals to Toowoomba since Easter Sunday 2020, becoming so highly regarded within the community the registered charity quickly outgrew its former James Street premises.
Now the volunteer-run kitchen finally has everything, including the kitchen sink, in its new premises just down the road at 174A James Street.
“It’s been such a special and humbling thing to see so many Toowoomba community members, businesses and organisations work so hard and give so much to get us to where we are today,” founder Tony Hurle said.
“We’ve had electrical and paint crews turn up and donate whole days of their time to transform the space from the old Budget Rent a Car into the brand new Tony’s Community Kitchen. Almost all the appliances and furniture has been donated, and we’ve have people help set up our phones and internet, covering both costs for 12 months. Everyone’s generosity has been completely overwhelming and wonderful.”
With the added luxury of running water, Tony’s is now fitted out with toilets, a shower, laundry and more kitchen facilities, offering those in need a safe refuge for a meal and freshen up 365 days of the year.
“We’re here every single day,” Mr Hurle said.
“Everyone is welcome.”
