Fuel watch: List of cheap fuel spots in Toowoomba

A Toowoomba service station owner divulges the truth behind the spikes and dips in petrol prices across the Garden City.

Residents have already felt the pinch at the bowser as the Government’s fuel excise ends and prices near $2 a litre.

BP Toowoomba service station owner Sid Bhadwaj said customers had felt the effects of rising costs of living for several months now, and it remained unclear how severe the next wave would be.

“We’ve seen people in a family SUV come and say how it used to cost them $100 to fuel up, and not its costing more than $140. That’s a big increase for a family budget,” he said.

“It’s draining everyone, and its confusing us because we don’t really know why the prices are going up.”

Mr Bhadwaj said it was easy for others to blame the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, but the answers to rising fuel costs weren’t as clear cut.

The Garden City is reportedly known to maintain fuel prices for up to a fortnight at a time, before service stations owners felt compelled to change.

Metro service stations however may change their prices daily.

“When the prices do change, people think its jumped or gone down dramatically, when it really doesn’t,” Mr Bhadwaj said.

“When the buying prices are going up, most (service station owners) will hold onto their prices for as long as they can, but then it comes to a tipping point.

“It will get too tight and you won’t make any money, so that’s when you’ll see a change (at the bowser).

The Federal Government ends the fuel excise tax cut on Wednesday night, adding another 25 cents per litre to the retail price of petrol.

“It’s important more than ever to do your homework and find good value for you,” Mr Bhadwaj said.

“We’re seeing that people are shopping around and are willing to go the distance for a better price.”
