The Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Marathon will see thousands of runners hit the tarmac and while there are events for runners of all skills, the community is being encouraged to take part in the fun as well.
Marathon organisers have sent out community guides to help everyone make the most of this incredible local event which includes advice to residents living along the running route as well as information for spectators who want to cheer on their friends and family.
With roads closing on May 3 and 4 to give way to Toowoomba’s dedicated athletes, here is what spectators can keep an eye out for over the marathon weekend:
There are five different running events over Saturday and Sunday including the runway mile and 5km on Saturday, and the 10km, half marathon, and marathon on Sunday.
The marathon course starts in Toowoomba’s city centre on Sunday, goes to Picnic Point Lookout, past Toowoomba City Hall, around Queens Park, past Cobb and Co Museum, around Prince Henry Heights and finishes at Toowoomba Sports Ground.
There are a number of designated spectator zones where people can cheer on runners including Picnic Point lookout, Toowoomba Sports Ground grandstand at the finish line, Margaret St start line, and Lindsay St near Toowoomba Sports Ground.
Due to road closures people are recommended to avoid travelling between 6.45am and 12pm on Sunday, May 4, and people residing along the marathon running route should consider parking their cars on their closest side street the night before the main event if they plan on travelling anywhere on Sunday.
People can also expect amplified noise along the course before 7am over the weekend and there will be additional tow away parking zones along the running route.
Travel delays
Residents in affected suburbs are recommended to anticipate travel delays and traffic will likely be congested in surrounding suburbs.
There will be delays on James and Kitchener streets between 6.15am and 6.35am.
Long St will be closed from 4.30am to 8.30am and travellers should use West St instead.
Herries St will also be closed between 4am and 8.30am and travellers should use James St instead.
Access to Prince Henry Heights will be monitored by police and traffic controllers.
In urgent circumstances people living in impacted areas can contact 0499 768 746 and someone from the Toowoomba Marathon team will help assess the situation.
It is not too late to enter the marathon events and tickets can be purchased at toowoombamarathon.com.au.
