City jeweller’s jobs hit close to home

A renowned city jeweller’s latest projects have struck a more personal chord. After designing a high-profile Aussie celebrity’s engagement ring, he turned to a ring for his own love.

George Sheppard proposed to girlfriend Kathleen Seagar with a ring designed by Lachlan Hogan.

Jeweller Lachlan Hogan’s work is expanding across the globe.

In the last few months alone he has designed pieces for customers in London, Canada and the Netherlands to name a few.

But two of his latest projects have hit very close to home.

At the end of last year, Mr Hogan collaborated with Australian music artist and member of Sheppard, George Sheppard, to design the perfect engagement ring for his girlfriend, Kathleen Seagar.

The Padparadscha pink sapphire and Argyle pink diamond engagement ring took 36.5 hours of labour from Mr Hogan, and is one of his most intricate designs to date.
“A ring like that requires a lot of attention to detail so the planning process was quite extensive,” the jeweller said.

The Sheppard performer proposed this month, and Mr Hogan said he had one extremely satisfied customer who reported back to him.

“He was very excited to hand it over to Kathleen and ask the question, he was very eager to show it to her,” Mr Hogan said.

“He knew she’d love the ring.”

When it comes to designing custom jewels, the key to success is collaboration, and using only the best quality stones.

“I customised the whole ring and we go through the whole process according to the customers’ requirement,” he said.

“If they contact us we go through every step from sourcing the stones to sketching and designing the ring.

“There’s a lot of time that goes into designing.”

Another project of particular importance to the designer was the engagement ring he would give to his own fiancee.

Mr Hogan proposed to his long-term girlfriend, Luci, in April with a personally designed engagement ring featuring argyle diamonds.

The design idea came quickly to Mr Hogan thanks to 10 years worth of hints from his partner.

“I sit and design with people all day every day and work to their requirements but it was nice to design a ring exactly how I wanted to do it and have the freedom to do it,” he said.

A perfectionist by nature, Mr Hogan said he always packs the pressure on to produce products he knows the customers will be happy with.

Every job on Mr Hogan’s list are of equal importance, so he is always aiming for perfection.

“I’m as hard on myself with customers as I am with my own jobs,” he said.

“You have the same pressure and responsibility so you treat every job like you want to do it perfectly.”

The stones in both rings were sourced all over the world, and the Hogans pride themselves on using only the most breathtaking, renowned stones to create their products.
