A Brisbane couple embarking on a two-week trip to western Queensland have had their journey go up in flames, after their vehicle caught fire while driving through Toowoomba.
It is believed a mechanical fault caused the fire near the corner of Herries and Kitchener Streets just after noon Tuesday, which sparked a quick response from firefighters barely 100m away.
The vehicle’s owner, Steve, said he asked his wife whether she was “burning toast” as they drove past Toowoomba Grammar School.
“I was about to pull over and the lady in the car beside me said ‘you’ve got flames coming out the bottom of your car’,” he said.
The owner and multiple surrounding businesses attempted to put out the blaze using fire extinguishers.
But their attempts were unsuccessful, as it is believed the fire was burning inside the fuel tank.
“Once the fuel tanks ruptured it was toast,” Steve said.
Firefighters deployed foam and allowed the fuel to burn off so it would not run into East Creek.
Steve and his wife were planning on driving to Carnarvon Gorge.
He thanked the surrounding good Samaritans who helped him battle the blaze.
Firefighters extinguished the fire about an hour after it was reported, and opened the street to traffic.
