Adoption day helps boost Toowoomba’s animal rescues

Two city pet stores have partnered with local rescue centres this month, to help dozens of furry friends find new homes.

PETSTOCK Toowoomba and Toowoomba City have partnered with the city’s animal rescue groups this month to find good homes for dozens of abandoned puppies, kittens, dogs and cats.

In celebration of National Pet Adoption Month, the two stores will have pets for adoption throughout the month of March and will also be hosting a National Pet Adoption Day on March 13.

“The big theme this year’s event is about adopting differently, things people might not normally consider, so instead of your stock standard puppy or kitten maybe an older dog or an animal with special needs,” PETstock Toowoomba manager Brad Wingett said.

“We have partnered with Angels Rescue and the other store with Belle Vie, we nearly always have kittens from Angels in throughout the course of the year – since the start of January we have adopted out another 25.”

Mr Wingett said adoption helped to “break the cycle of surplus animals that didn’t have a home”.

Angels Rescue animal carer Emma Gambin said it was great to see stores working with local rescues.

“March 13 will be a big day and we’ll be here, there will be a few animals that have been adopted and will be collected on the day and then there will be ones available for adoption,” Ms Gambin said.

“It’s great to see (our animals) adopted out, particularly to families with kids, you just see their eyes light up and you know they are going to love their pet.”
