In only minutes, tickets for the popular Jatbula Trail were gone – with a total of 502 bookings, including group and single walkers, made.

At 10am on Tuesday, Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife posted to Facebook that tickets for the trail had been fully booked for 2025, just one hour after bookings opened, leaving a number of Territorians who missed out upset and frustrated.

“Harder to get than Taylor swift tickets,” one commenter said.

Many described the booking system itself as “terrible” and “unfair”.

“Bit hard to book a spot when it sells out right on 9am,” one user said.

“I was there right on 9am … clicked the green and the next page said they were unavailable,” said another.

While bookings have closed, a spokesperson for the DTH said those who missed out should not lose hope.

“Customers who missed out today should keep an eye on the booking site as all cancellations are immediately released back into the system,” the spokesperson said.

“It is a live booking system and last year we had many walkers securing places later on in the season.”

There were other ways Territorians could get involved, the spokesperson said.

“With the Jatbula Trail having a maximum number of allowed walkers per day, the other option is to book a guided tour,” the spokesperson said.

“This is an ideal option for walkers that are not confident walking solo.

“There are two other major multi-day walks in the NT can be booked through Parks and Wildlife: the world class Larapinta Trail in Central Australia and the Tabletop Walk in Litchfield NP.

“Shorter walks are possible in Nitmiluk NP, for example 8th Gorge, Smitt Rock or day hikes.”

The spokesperson said the trail was iconic to the Territory.

“Being a one way trail makes it interesting for walkers as they do not have to backtrack and each section is unique in its own right,” they said.

“The trail is limited to 15 departures per day which allows hikers to immerse themselves in nature.

“It provides multiple swimming opportunities along the way.”
