Darwin has struck more travel gold with Jetstar launching a new direct seasonal service on its its Airbus A320 aircraft between the Northern Territory capital and the Gold Coast in late June.

The new flights will go on sale from midday Thursday, with one-way sale fares available from $109.

The seasonal service will add more than 25,000 new low fare seats a year, providing an affordable connection between the two holiday hot spots and boosting local tourism.

The news follows a flood of NT government and aviation industry announcements that includes a new Airnorth air service from Alice Springs to Cairns and new AirAsia service from Darwin to Denpasar.

Qantas will also resume direct Darwin services to Singapore and Canberra.

Both Jetstar and Qantas have also announced increased services in coming months on Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney routes.

These increased services will add more than 95,000 new seats to and from Darwin in 2025, boosting domestic capacity for the Territory’s capital by 14 per cent compared to the same time last year.

As with the Airnorth-Cairns services, the Jetstar Darwin-Gold Coast route is supported under the Territory Government’s Territory Aviation Attraction Scheme (TAAS).

Trade, Business and Asian Relations Minister Robyn Cahill said having direct access to key holiday regions improved connectivity for travellers and enhanced the liveability for the Northern Territory.

“We are focused on pursuing more aviation services coming into the Territory and will continue to invest in this area,” Minister Cahill said.

Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Marie-Clare Boothby said the increased flight options would improve accessibility to the Territory for tourists, business travellers and investors.

“Along with making travel easier for Territorians to visit family and friends interstate,” Minister Boothby said.

Rob Porter, executive general manager, Airport Development Group, said the Gold Coast direct flights were a significant milestone for the NT aviation sector.

“This new service strengthens our tourism sector, improving access to key domestic markets,” he said.

“With the trifecta of new routes announced in recent weeks, there are even more pathways for people to connect with the Northern Territory, supporting our region’s growth, prosperity and economic development.”

The seasonal service will operate between Darwin and the Gold Coast from 26 June 2025 to the end of October, four times a week.

Jetstar CEO, Stephanie Tully said the new seasonal Gold Coast service would eliminate the need for people to transit through other cities and make it much easier and affordable for travellers to fly between the Northern Territory and Queensland.

“We thank the Northern Territory Government, Darwin Airport and Gold Coast Airport for their support in launching this new route,” she said.

The announcement comes as the NT News hosts executives from Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin and Airnorth for an aviation rountable in Darwin on Wednesday.
