Just days out from this week’s crucial NT News aviation round table, Qantas and Jetstar have announced more than 95,000 new seats will be added to/from Darwin this year.

This will boost domestic capacity for the Territory’s capital by 11 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Jetstar Group CEO Stephanie Tully said more than 95,000 new domestic seats a year would provide even more flight and fare options across Qantas and Jetstar, supporting locals and the NT’s tourism economy.

“The Qantas Group’s total capacity in Darwin will grow by 11 per cent compared to the same time last year as we count down to the launch of Qantas’ new Darwin to Singapore service next month,” she said.

“We’re always looking for ways to help Territorians take off more for less, with fares from just $79 last year.

“Our additional capacity will see Jetstar offer daily flights between Adelaide and Darwin, providing close to 3000 low-cost seats a week on the route.”

The new capacity includes the following routes:

- Darwin to Adelaide: Increase from 10 currently up to 14 Qantas flights a week from April to May. Jetstar will also increase flights from four up to seven a week between July and October. It means during the peak July to October period, Qantas Group (Qantas and Jetstar) will operate three times daily between Darwin and Adelaide.

- Darwin to Brisbane: Increase from nine currently up to 10 Qantas flights a week in May and up to 13 in June including a new daily Boeing 737 service.

- Darwin to Sydney: Increase from 11 up to 12 Qantas flights a week from April to May, with double daily flights between June and October. These changes will see the Qantas operate three times daily between Darwin and Sydney in the peak July school holiday period.

- Darwin to Canberra: The return of Qantas’ three-per-week seasonal service from July to September.

The capacity increase will see both Qantas and Jetstar scheduled to operate more than 2.3 million seats in and out of the NT this year as the airlines continue to explore options for future expansion.

The domestic capacity increase follows hot on the heels of the launch of Qantas’ new service between Darwin and Singapore on March 30, with more than 60,000 new seats providing travellers a gateway to Asia, Europe and beyond.

Qantas and Tourism NT have also just kicked off their latest Alice Springs tourism campaign ‘She’s Alice’ to build awareness of holiday experiences in Alice Springs and the surrounding region.
