Steps to reopen the Glenorchy Memorial Pool

The Glenorchy Memorial Pool has been closed for a year, but there is a plan to reopen it. Here are the boxes that need to be ticked before the pool can be used again.

The Glenorchy City Council says it’s working with aquatic engineers to create an initial plan to both repair and upgrade the Glenorchy Memorial Pool.

The pool has been closed since the middle of last year, after it was deemed unsafe because of its deteriorating facilities.

Its closure prompted outrage from the community, which has been fighting for the pool to be repaired or replaced.

The council is undertaking more preparation for repairs to be done and is creating a plan for the project.

Among the list of work which needs to be done to make the pool usable is concrete repairs, an upgrade of the entry area, a new pool heating system, the removal of the slide to fix safety issues, and a new filtration system for the toddler pool.

Once the council completes its preliminary plan, it will work with engineers and architects to prepare the designs and costings, before it can engage contractors and begin works.

Last month Glenorchy voters showed overwhelmingly support for saving their much loved memorial pool in an elector poll.

Voters were asked whether the council should urgently repair and reopen the pool with government funding, and whether the council should apply for future government funds to redevelop the pool to serve the community in the long run.

Eight-ninr per cent of voters said ‘yes’ to the first question, 93 per cent said ‘yes’ to the second question.

The council was promised $5m during the state election to repair and reopen the pool.
