The $5m promised during the election to repair the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool will be provided in the state budget in September.

Liberal Member for Clark Madeleine Ogilvie said the pool was a northern suburbs’ institution and its closure last July had a deep impact on the Glenorchy community.

“Our government has listened to the Glenorchy community and constituents, and I know that the closure of the pool has troubled the wider community,” she said.

“In parliament just this week, we heard of the keen interest of the council for the government to intervene and save this facility.

“I am proud to say, we are acting, with the $5m funding commitment we took to the recent election now confirmed to be provided in the upcoming 2024-2025 State Budget.

“This funding will allow the pool to re-open while longer-term solutions are developed.”

Acting Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the Glenorchy City Council was very pleased to have the promised funding confirmed to allow council to repair and re-open the pool.

“We thank the State Government for the investment in this important facility, and the pool advocates for their passionate work in championing this cause,” she said.

“Preliminary work has already commenced and Council officers are finalising a plan of action to start the repair work in earnest as soon as the Grant Deed for funding is signed.”

The Department of State Growth is working with the Glenorchy City Council to start the work required and discuss the specific terms of the funding, including ongoing governance arrangements for the project.
