A group of youths has been seen flashing a designer bag worth thousands of dollars in CCTV footage taken near the Gilberton home of an eminent doctor before he was allegedly violently attacked.

Intensive care pediatrician Dr Michael Yung, 61, was the victim of a “life-threatening assault” during the allegedly unprovoked break-in inside his $2m James St, Gilberton home at 4.20am on Monday.

CCTV footage, which police have seized, shows a gang of five youths trying to break in at a nearby Dutton Tce mansion as they roamed door-to-door.

In the footage, two young men can be seen walking up to the front gate of the home.

One of them, wearing a white hoodie and white track pants, is wearing a Gucci messenger bag which, if real, would be worth between $1500 and $5000.

The pair pulls up their hoods as they approach the gate, with the Gucci-wearer — whose hands are covered by gloves — attempting to reach through the bars and open it.

After the unsuccessful attempt, they jog away from the home.
Another youth can be seen scaling the fence of the property from the inside of the front garden before fleeing on foot.

Residents, who reported hearing screams on the night of the attack, also told how the area had been subject to a spate of recent break ins.

In a statement to The Advertiser on Monday night, Major Crime Investigation Branch officer in charge, Detective Superintendent Des Bray, said: “The investigation is in its infancy so it is too early to form a view if it is linked to other offences.

“But that will be one of a number of avenues of investigation police consider. Police believe the victim was attacked inside his home.

“The incident has been declared a major crime and (my team) will lead the investigation.”

Police ruled out links to Dr Yung’s alleged murder and youth gangs following the arrest on Tuesday night of a man and woman over the incident.

Police urged anyone with dashcam footage between 3.30am and 5am Monday, within a 500m radius of James Street and Nottage Terrace at Gilberton to contact police.
