Port Adelaide Football Club release statement after death of Danny Westhoff

Port Adelaide Football Club has spoken out after the father of former players Justin and Matthew Westhoff died in a motorcycle crash.

The Port Adelaide Football Club says it is devastated after the death of the father of former players Justin and Matthew Westhoff.

In a statement, club CEO Matthew Richardson said “the club was devastated by the tragic news” that Danny Westhoff had died in a motorcycle crash at Vine Vale on Friday.

Mr Westhoff died at the scene of the crash despite desperate attempts to save him.

Port Adelaide offered its heartfelt condolences and asked the community to give the Westhoff family “privacy” during this difficult time.

“The club sends its heartfelt condolences to Robyn, sons Leigh, Justin and Matthew and extended family,” Mr Richardson said.

“Our thoughts are also with the Tanunda Football Club at this time. Danny contributed so much to their club and community.

“We will provide the Westhoff family with whatever ongoing support we can during this most difficult time.”

The 59-year-old died after crashing his motorcycle into a tree, at the intersection of Light Pass Rd and Basedow Rd at Vine Vale.

A popular local identity, he had been involved with the Tanunda Football Club since the 1990s and two sons, Matthew and Leigh, still play for the Magpies.

He won an A-Grade premiership as a player in 2002 and was president in 2019 when the club added to the trophy cabinet by winning the flag once again.

Barossa Mayor Bim Lange was shocked to hear of his death and said it would be felt far and wide in the Barossa community. He said Mr Westhoff was a great ambassador for the Tanunda Football Club.
