The small Barossa community of Tanunda has been rocked by the death of football stalwart Danny Westhoff in a motorcycle crash on Friday afternoon.

The 59-year-old father of former Port Adelaide players Justin and Matthew Westhoff died when his motorcycle left the road and crashed into a tree at the intersection of Light Pass Rd and Basedow Rd, at Vine Vale, just after 5.30pm.

Despite desperate attempts by a passer-by and paramedics to revive him, Mr Westhoff was unable to be saved.

A popular local identity, he had been involved with the Tanunda Football Club since the 1990s and two sons, Matthew and Leigh, still play for the Magpies.

He won an A-Grade premiership as a player in 2002 and was president in 2019 when the club added to the trophy cabinet by winning the flag once again.

He only recently handed over the presidency reins.

Barossa Mayor Bim Lange was shocked to hear of his death and said it would be felt far and wide in the Barossa community.

He said Mr Westhoff was a great ambassador for the Tanunda Football Club.

“He was very much entrenched in the community of Tanunda, and was actively involved in the football club both as a president and a supporter of his sons who played there,” he said.

“My heart goes out to his family and friends.”

Mr Lange said it was tragic to have another life lost on regional roads.

There have been 35 lives lost on SA roads this year compared with 16 for the same time last year and Mr Westhoff’s death was the first of three across SA this weekend.

Two women died in separate, two-car collisions on Saturday – Dr Georgina Heath about 12.30am at Hackham in a horrorific crash that also injured five people and a 40-year-old woman about 10pm on North East Road at Windsor Gardens, over which a man was arrested.
