Neighbourhood living in fear after CCTV footage shows man allegedly trying to break into cars

A tight-knit community in Adelaide’s south is living in fear after CCTV footage revealed a creepy man breaking into a number of cars.

Video taken from multiple homes in the Woodcroft Heights estate in Morphett Vale shows a man walking his dog between Sunday night and Monday morning, peeking inside vehicles and even breaking into some.

Josh Foglia, who lives in the quiet neighbourhood with his wife Naomi Abbott and their two children, said the incidents had left people feeling “uncomfortable in their own street”.

“He’s walked into our driveway and gotten into the car so that’s just added an extra layer to it that he’s now metres away from the door and where my kids sleep,” Mr Foglia, 33, said.

“Naturally I’m a bit like ‘all right, let’s see if we can get this guy off the streets or at least scare him off’.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of neighbours and scared and frustrated is generally the vibe I’m getting. No one wants to feel uncomfortable in their own street.”

SA police confirmed an investigation had started after reports three cars had been interfered with between Sunday night and Monday morning.

“Two vehicles, one in the driveway and one parked in the street, in Elanora Ave, Morphett Vale were entered and personal property, including sunglasses, a wallet and loose change were stolen,” a spokesperson said.

“A similar event occurred in Diosma Drive, Morphett Vale about 3.30am on Monday, May 6, when a parked car was entered and loose change stolen. Police are investigating if the incidents are linked.

“Police urge residents to always lock parked cars and remove any valuables. If possible, secure vehicles behind locked gates or roller doors or park in well-lit areas.”

Mr Foglia said it was the third time a similar incident had occurred in the area.

“I guess this time around we’re a bit over it so we’re doing a bit more than we did the first couple of times and actually knocking on doors and seeing who else has been impacted and who else has footage,” he said.

“The thing that stung most this time is that they got both of our cars – last time it was just mine and they got nothing but this time they actually got Naomi’s purse and some money so I guess we’re just taking it a bit more seriously.

“We’re hoping that if we can spread it far enough, eventually something gets done about it and we don’t see the guy again.

Ms Abbott said the man stole her purse, which contained about $220, as well as a couple pairs of sunglasses from her car.

Anyone who saw any suspicious activity or has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at www.crimestopperssa.com.au or on 1800 333 000.
